Bruno Mathsson at Bard Graduate Center

The designs of Swedish modernist Bruno Mathsson are featured in an exhibition at Bard Graduate Center on the Upper West Side of Manhattan from March 22 to June 10, 2007.

Designer and architect Bruno Mathsson (1907-1988) was a crucial figure in 20th-century design.  Mathsson was a pioneer in the development of ergonomics in furniture design, working with new materials such as bentwood and tubular steel to create chair designs for work and relaxation that corresponded to the contours of the human form without sacrificing elegance.

His approach to architecture was, in many ways, similar to his approach to furniture.  By experimenting with the inherent properties of different materials, particularly glass, and new technologies such as solar energy and radiant floor heating, Mathsson developed plans for the modern house that emphasized the connection between humankind and nature.

The Bard Graduate Center presents an array of exhibition-related public programs to complement the exhibition Bruno Mathsson: Architect and Designer, which will be on view at the Bard Graduate Center Gallery from March 22 through June 10.  The related events include several lectures and forums, a film screening, a private exhibition tour and a city walking tour.
