"Evil" Starring Andreas Wilson Released in U.S. Theaters by Magnolia Pictures

The Swedish film nominated for an Academy Award® in the category Best Foreign Language Film 2003 opens in U.S. theaters this month, beginning with a limited engagement at Cinema Village in New York on March 10-17, 2006.

Evil (original title Ondskan) is directed by Mikael Håfström and based on the novel of the same name by Swedish writer and journalist Jan Guillou.  Originally released in 2003, it marked the big screen debut of emerging star Andreas Wilson and also featured a strong performance by Gustaf Skarsgård.  Evil became one of Sweden's biggest box office hits in recent years and won the Best Film at the Swedish Film Awards in 2003.  It received major attention and critical praise at several international film festivals and was nominated for an Academy Award® in the category Best Foreign Language Film 2003.

Evil is a boarding school drama that offers a searing look at the social underpinnings and moral implications of physical violence.  Set in Sweden in the 1950s, the film tells the story of a boy who, after years of being beaten at home by his stepfather, has become a troublemaker of his own and is expelled from school for fighting.  Given one last chance to redeem himself at a prestigious boarding school, he quickly becomes the victim of systematic bullying by his new classmates.  He does his utmost to suppress his own violent tendencies and to maintain his dignity without fighting back, until a vulnerable friend gets pulled into the fray...

Evil is a story of cruelty and the way through it — but also about genuine friendship and the beginnings of love.
