Sweden Launches Open Trade Gate Sweden to Facilitate Exports for Developing Countries

“If we are to achieve free trade on equal terms, we must draw attention to the problems confronting export companies in developing countries. In addition to simplifying the regulations and minimising red tape, we must help them with information about the requirements, instructions and regulations that apply. We cannot demand that entrepreneurs in developing countries be experts in the EU tariff system, certification issues, packaging requirements and administrative routines.”

This statement was made by Minister for International Development Co-operation, Ms Carin Jämtin, and Minister for Industry and Trade, Mr Thomas Östros, as they inaugurated Open Trade Gate Sweden, the Swedish contact point for exporters from developing countries. By offering advice and information, the contact point assists entrepreneurs in developing countries who want to export to Sweden and the EU.

Exports by developing countries to rich countries have doubled over the past 20 years. Nevertheless, many developing countries are lagging behind. Despite that EU tariff barriers have gradually been lowered and in some cases completely abolished, few developing countries are able to benefit from the new opportunities.

“Complicated trade regulations and red tape are often as much of a barrier as tariffs and subsidies” say Mrs Jämtin and Mr Östros.
