Swedish Holiday Shopping in New York

With Christmas season approaching in a hurry, there are plenty of ways to stock up on Swedish gifts in New York in 2004.

Fanny and Alexander (pictured) is widely considered Ingmar Bergman's masterpiece and remains the quintessential Swedish Christmas film.  And now, just in time for the holidays, Criterion Collections has released a special edition DVD box set featuring both the theatrical version -- winner of the 1984 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film -- and the original five-hour television version, as well as Bergman's own documentary about the making of the film, offering a unique glimpse into his creative process.  The box set is available at all major video retailers.

The expanded Holiday Shop at Scandinavia House offers a large selection of contemporary products from leading Swedish design houses such as Orrefors, Kosta Boda and Färg Form in addition to traditional Scandinavian holiday items.  Special display sections feature home design items, spa and sauna products, handmade textiles, traditional decorations, ornaments, toys, jewelry, tableware, specialty foods, kitchenware and or cookbooks.  The Shop will have a special Swedish sale event on December 16, 2004, offering a 20% discount to customers with invitation print-outs (available in the right-hand column of this page).

On Sunday, December 19, 2004, Good World Bar & Grill presents its second annual Swedish Christmas Street Fair and Gingerbread House Contest on Orchard Street between Division and Canal Streets in Chinatown.  A whole day of Swedish arts and crafts, design, fashion, food, music and fun for the whole family.

Several stores in the New York area offer an assortment of Swedish design, including Clearly First, Country SwedishOrrefors Kosta Boda, Scandinavian Design, White on White, and IKEA

The Swedish cosmetics line FACE Stockholm is available at locations in SoHo, TriBeCa, the Upper East Side, the Upper West Side and Columbus Circle.

Swedish downtown boutique Smaak and J.Lindeberg feature cutting-edge fashion, while the Swedish retail giant H&M offers a wide variety of clothing at affordable prices.  On the Upper West Side, the Swedish women's clothing boutique Älskling (228 Columbus Avenue) features the creations of designers Agneta Eckemyr, Marrika Nakk and Vivianne Tvilling.

The jewelry of Swedish designers Yvonne Clamf and Christine Söderberg is available at their Yvone Christa store in SoHo.  Ordning&Reda, the chic line of Swedish stationery and office products, is available at Bodum Café and Home Store on 14th Street.
