Anders Petersen is one of the most important European photographers living today. He has participated in many exhibitions in Europe, Asia and Latin America, but has had very limited exposure in the United States. Born in Stockholm in 1944, Anders Petersen was strongly influenced by the documentary photography of World War II. After training with Christer Strömholm between 1966 and 1968, he came to develop his own style, a raw and intimate social photography aiming to show the hidden aspects of human nature. For the first time ever in New York, Marvelli Gallery presents an exhibit of his photographs, representative of key moments in his career, dating from the late 1960s through the 1990s. Displayed in the front gallery will be an installation entitled Close Distance including approximately 60 photographs, recently purchased by the Centre Pompidou in Paris. The back gallery will feature vintage prints from Café Lehmitz, a daily chronicle of a Hamburg coffee shop frequented by transvestites and prostitutes, widely considered a seminal work in the development of European photography.Anders PetersenMarvelli Gallery526 West 26th Street, 2nd floorNovember 23 - December 31, 2004For more information: www.marvelligallery.comPhoto: © Anders Petersen, courtesy of Marvelli Gallery
