Swedish Prime Minister Göran Persson Receives World Statesman Award

Prime Minister Göran Persson will be honored with the World Statesman Award from the Appeal of Conscience Foundation in New York on September 20, 2004.

Prime Minister Persson will receive the World Statesman Award for his commitment to advancing human rights, freedom and tolerance.  He has provided leadership on the international scene in promoting democracy, peace, and social justice; he has been acclaimed for convening the Stockholm International Forums on the Holocaust and the Prevention of Genocide.

The Appeal of Conscience Foundation is an interfaith coalition of business and religious leaders actively involved in promoting religious freedom and human rights worldwide.

Prime Minister Persson will accept the award at the 2004 Annual Awards Dinner at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City on September 20.

The following day, on September 21, Prime Minister Persson is scheduled to participate in bilateral meetings with several other heads of state, as well as the opening of general debate of the 59th session of the UN General Assembly.
