Eltel Networks of Sweden has been commissioned by TANESCO to undertake the electrification of Serengeti district. The contract is worth 4 billion TSh. The cost will be borne by the Government of Sweden within the bilateral Development Cooperation Programme between Tanzania and Sweden.
The national grid will be extended through a 33kV transmission line from the Bunda substation to connect a number of villages including Mugumu, Natta, Mugeta, Fort Ikoma and several other villages. Also included are distribution transformers and low voltage networks. The grid expansion is expected to be completed in June 2005.
The Government of Sweden and Swedish companies have participated in the development of Tanzania’s energy sector for more than 30 years. The provision of electricity to rural areas of Tanzania is one of the focal points of Swedish development cooperation in Tanzania. Current projects include also Urambo and Njombe districts.
Sweden is currently supporting the reform of Tanzania’s energy sector, including support to establishing a rural energy agency and a rural energy fund.
