”Raoul Wallenberg: a Human Rights Defender” – an Event in Warsaw
The Human Dimension Implementation Meeting (HDIM), Europe's largest annual human rights and democracy conference, is organized every year by the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe's Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR).
This year the meeting is taking place in Warsaw September 24 – October 5.
A side event hosted by the Swedish Foreign Ministry was organized on September 25. The event focused on the role of Raoul Wallenberg as a human rights defender.
Ingrid Carlberg, the author of a recent biography on Raoul Wallenberg, introduced the event by giving an informative presentation of the Swedish diplomat, his upbringing, early professional career and his mission in Budapest.
Andreas Rocca representing Front Line Defenders and the director of OSCE/ODIHR's department of human rights Snjezana Bokulic provided their perspective on the challenges of human rights defending in the world today. Mr Hans Dahlgren, Sweden's Ambassador for Human Rights, was moderating the meeting which was well attended by, among others the former polish minister of foreign affairs Adam Daniel Rotfeld.
