This page is a general overview of how to apply for a Swedish passport and ID-card.
Passport/ID-card, applying in Sweden
The cheapest and quickest way of applying for a passport is to do so during a visit to Sweden. Normal processing time is a week and the fee for a passport is SEK 350 and for an ID-card SEK 400.
If you do not have time to collect the passport in Sweden, it can be collected at the Embassy or a Consulate in the Netherlands. There will be an additional fee, payable to the office where you collect your new passport.

Applying in The Hague
The Embassy uses an online appointment booking system for the application of passports/ID-cards; this means that you must book an appointment in advance in order to apply for a passport/ID-card.
The applicant must visit the Embassy in person when applying for a passport, the form Information for verification of Swedish citizenship must be filled out before arrival to the Embassy and all mandatory documents must be brought.

Passport-photo and fingerprints
A photo for the passport and fingerprints will be taken in the Embassy’s photo-booth in connection to the submission of the application.
You will be able to collect your new passport/ID-card approximately 2-4 weeks after the submission of your completed application.

Collection of your passport
At the time of application you can choose where you wish to collect your passport. You may collect your passport either at the Embassy in The Hague, at the Consulate in Groningen or at another Swedish foreign authority. You must bring your old passport so that it can be maculated before you can collect your new one. Please note that the Embassy has special opening hours for collection of passports. It is not possible to collect passports at other times than the ones that are designated.
Please note the following:
- In order for us to be able to process your application all forms
required must be submitted. It is ultimately your responsibility to ensure that all of the required documents are submitted.
- You must have a personal identity number (personnummer) or a co-ordination number (samordningsnummer) at the time of application.
- The applicant’s name must be the same as the one that is registered in the Swedish population record (folkbokföring). This information serves as the basis for the application of a passport. It is therefore crucial that you report e.g. change of surname following marriage to Skatteverket (Swedish Tax Agency).
