Required documents

If you are a citizen of a country outside the EU/EEA and wish to move to a family member in Sweden who is a Swedish citizen or a citizen of a country outside the EU/EAA, you need to provide the following documents.

If you apply online, you attach the documents electronically. However, you have to present the original documents when you visit the Consulate for your interview.

If you submit a paper application, you have to send all the required documents to the Consulate. Please note that the application must be submitted in two complete sets. Documents issued by the authorities in your country of origin must be translated into Swedish or English by an authorised translator. All copies must be notarized. Submitted documents will not be returned.

Documents required by all applicants

  • A notarized copy of valid passport
  • An extract from the population registry in Sweden (personbevis), for the person living in Sweden. This can be obtained through the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket)
  • A notarized copy of U.S. Alien Reg. Card or other valid resident visa, if applicable.

  • If you are not applying online, you need to fill out the form Application for residence permit to settle in Sweden, form no. 161011, and the form Family details, no. 239011See heading below for information about what forms are required for children. 

Married couples

If you are married, you need the following:

  • The documents required by all applicants 
  • Marriage Certificate
  • A document showing that the marriage has been registered in your country of origin (equivalent to a civic registration certificate in Sweden), where possible
  • A rental contract or proof of ownership of your joint residence, or other document that shows you have lived together (applies to persons who have lived in a country other than Sweden)
  • Application form #T92

Unmarried couples

If you are not married, you need:

  • The documents required by all applicants
  • A document showing that you are not married, where possible. E.g. a 'record of no record' from the vital records in your county. 
  • A rental contract or proof of ownership of your joint residence, or other document that shows you have lived together (applies to persons who have lived in a country other than Sweden)
  • Application form #T91

Children under age

If you have children under 18 accompanying you to Sweden you can apply for a residence permit for them in your online application.

Children under age need:

  • The documents required by all applicants
  • If you are not applying online or if the child is applying alone, form no. 163011Application for a residence permit for a child under the age of 18 to settle in Sweden, and form no. 239011Family details, needs to be submitted as a paper application
  • Birth Certificate
  • Written consent of the child’s custodian. If legal custody has been granted to one parent or to another person, legal proof of guardianship must be submitted with the application.

Other close relatives

Other close relatives are members of your family other than your husband/wife/common law spouse, a minor or the parent of a minor.

If you are in this category, you need:

  • The documents required by all applicants 
  • A document certifying that you and your relative are dependent on each other and have difficulty living apart, e.g. for social, emotional or financial reasons
  • A document showing how you are related
  • A document showing that you lived together immediately before the relative moved to Sweden
