The Swedish Institute Study Scholarships for South Africans

The Swedish Institute Study Scholarships target highly-qualified students and are awarded for studies in Sweden starting in an autumn (Aug/Sep) semester. The scholarships are intended for full-time master's level studies in Sweden and cover both living costs and tuition fees.

The Swedish Institute has decided to allocate up to 10 scholarships for South African students on an annual basis for three years. The scholarships are for full-time master’s level studies in Sweden for the academic years of 2014/15, 2015/16 and 2016/17.

Scholarships are granted on condition that the students have been admitted to a master's programmes (i.e. not bachelor’s) at a Swedish university. Please note that the deadline for online applications for master’s programmes starting Aug/Sep 2015 is 15 January 2015. Applicants must be South African citizens and priority will be given to applicants who have completed bachelor’s studies from a South African university. There is no age limit for scholarship holders.

Eligible programmes

The list includes master programmes within the following subject areas: Social Science focusing on Democracy, Social Studies, Law, Human rights, Gender Studies, and Business, Information and Communication Technologies and Environment and Sustainability. The programmes are selected by the Swedish Universities and the list is available on the website www.studyinsweden.se

Scholarship benefits and period

The scholarship covers both the tuition fee and living expenses to the amount of SEK 9,000 per month. Scholarship holders will receive a travel grant of SEK 15,000 and are also insured by the Swedish State Group Insurance against illness and accident during the scholarship period.

The scholarship is granted for one academic year, i.e. for two semesters at a time. It will be extended for programmes longer than two semesters provided that the student’s study results are satisfactory.
