Time to face the Climate

The time has now come to face the Climate - or at least Face up to the effects of the climate. The Swedish Embassy together with the Swedish Institute is launching the "The Facing the Climate" exhibition series that has been staged in a number of cities around the world. The time has now come to South Africa and the exhibition kicked off in Cape Town on the 28th of September. The turn has now come for the exhibition to be shown in Johannesburg at the Nirox gallery.

The series combines climate-themed cartoons by five Swedish artists with the climate-related artworks of five South African cartoonists. Together they take a sharp look at the climate issue and provide some amusing and alarming reflections on climate change.

In April 2010 the Swedish Institute launched an exhibition to illustrate Sweden's strong commitment to climate and environmental issues. Two years down the line the exhibition and the climate images have been seen by more than 135.000 people in Athens, Tirana, Tel Aviv, Rio de Janeiro, Novosibirsk and now it will be shown in three South African cities.

The Facing the Climate exhibition is accompanied by a workshop, bringing participants together with the South African cartoonists and the exhibition curator in an interactive event that considers and enacts the communicative and cathartic potential of cartoons.

The exhibition opened on Friday the 28th of September at 18h45 pm at the THE MICHAELIS GALLERY, University of Cape Town.

On the 28th of October the exhibition opens at the Niroxprojects, Arts n Main, Maboneng. Time: 12h00pm. Check out the Invitation Two workshops will accompany the exhibition: 1) Towards a Grass Roots Women's Movement around Climate Justice and Sustainable Development. 2) A cartooning workshop on the theme of Facing the Climate will be held on 11 November 2012 from 12h30pm—15h30pm.
