PDC between Sonke Gender Justice and Men for Gender Equality
MenCare is a global campaign for gender equitable fatherhood. Gender equitable fatherhood is good for children, women and men since it improves maternal and child health, and prevents violence. In 2012 and 2013 Sida, through Partner Driven Cooperation (PDC), started support for a project that initiated a multi level implementation of MenCare in Southern Africa.
Sonke Gender Justice from South Africa and Men for Gender Equality from Sweden created a partnership to develop MenCare gender equitable fatherhood campaigns in three sites in three countries in Southern Africa namely with FAMSA Western Cape in Cape Town South Africa, Lifeline Childline in Windhoek Namibia and Stepping Stones International in Gaborone Botswana.
On 3 May the project had its first annual review meeting in Cape Town, where Sonke and MfJ shared results with Sida South Africa. In the first year of the project, the partner organisations had established the necessary relationships with local stakeholders and health facilities in order to implement a multi layer MenCare campaign.
One example of success was an innovative recruitment event in rural Botswana that involved doll-diaper changing session during the 16 days of activism for no violence against women.
