A Schengen visa is required for persons of certain nationalities who wish to visit the Schengen countries. U.S. citizens may travel without a visa to Sweden and stay up to 90 days. Please note that the Consulate General of Sweden in New York no longer accepts any Schengen visa application.
> List of foreign citizens who require a visa for Sweden
Please note that the Consulate General of Sweden in New York does not accepts visa applications! Please visit the website of the Embassy of Sweden in Washington DC for further information.
Please note that a U.S. citizen does not need a visa to travel to Sweden, or the rest of the Schengen area. However, in order to travel to the Schengen area, a valid passport is required and it must not expire sooner than three months after the departure from the Schengen area (including Sweden). This means that a U.S. citizen traveling to Sweden must make sure that his/her passport is valid for at least three months after his/her departure from Sweden.
As of May 9, 2014, all applicants applying for a Schengen visa must submit biometric data (ten finger scans and a digital photo). As the required equipment is not available at the Consulate in New York, all applicants must then schedule an appointment at the Embassy of Sweden in Washington, D.C. to apply for a visa in person. (Residents of certain states on the West Coast may choose to schedule appointments at other locations, please see the Embassy's website for further details).
The biometric data is stored in the Visa Information System (VIS), an IT-system that allows Schengen States to exchange data for five years. Frequent travellers to the Schengen Area do not have to provide new finger scans every time they apply for a new visa. Once finger scans are stored in the VIS, they can be reused for further visa applications over a 5-year period, which may enable applicants to reapply for Schengen visas at other locations than the Embassy of Sweden in Washington DC. For more information about VIS, please see: http://ec.europa.eu.
To schedule a visa appointment, please call the Embassy in Washington DC at 202-467-2694 between 11:00 am - 12:00noon EST on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, or email firstname.lastname@example.org. Required documents are listed on the Embassy's website.
