Midsummer in Battery Park
On Friday, June 24, the annual Swedish Midsummer Festival once again took place in Battery Park City. The sun was shining from blue skies as an estimated 8,000+ people gathered in Robert F. Wagner Jr. Park and Pier A Plaza on Manhattan's southernmost tip to picnic in the grass, decorate the midsummer pole, make flower wreaths, play traditional games and dance to authentic fiddle music.
The program featured traditional music by Paul Dahlin and fiddlers from the American Swedish Institute in Minneapolis, folk dances from Barnklubben Elsa Rix, and dancing led by Scandinavian folklorist and singer Ross Sutter. Food stands offered delicacies from some of New York's finest Swedish restaurants and food purveyors, including FIKA, Smorgas Chef/Crepes du Nord, Streetbird, Sockerbit, The Shop at Scandinavia House and Nordic Preserves.
The Swedish Midsummer Festival is co-presented by Battery Park City Parks and the Consulate General of Sweden in New York, with generous support from the following sponsors:
