Applying for a visa to Sweden

If you want to visit Sweden and are a citizen of a country outside the EU, you may need a visa.

List of countries whose citizens need a visa to visit Sweden

Visa for visiting Sweden

In order to visit Sweden you may need an entry visa. An entry visa is a permit required for persons wishing to enter Sweden for a temporary visit, for example:

  • on business or to take part in a conference
  • to visit relatives and friends
  • as a tourist

How to apply:

To improve the service available to visa applicants, the Embassy of Sweden in Nairobi cooperates with VFS Global. You present your application in person to VFS Global in Nairobi and they can provide you with information and other kinds of service. When the decision has been made at the embassy you collect your passport and the decision at the VFS Global office or have it sent to your home address for a fee. The Embassy always aims at processing your visa as quick as possible, but please note that it can take up to 15 days to handle your application.

VFS Global charges a service fee in addition to the visa fee. Check the VFS Global website VFS Kenya for the application centre’s address and opening hours, as well as for detailed information on procedures and requirements for visa applications, including the service fee which is regularly updated.

General information on how to apply for a visa is found below. For further information on each type of visa, please refer to the VFS Kenya website.

Please note the 15 day standard processing time for a Schengen visa application. All requests for fast-tracking need to be duly motivated.

How long is a visa valid?

Visas are granted for a maximum of 90 days at a time.

Where is a visa valid?

An entry visa is normally valid in all the Schengen countries. In exceptional cases a visa may be granted solely for entry into the country that issued it. For more information on the Schengen Agreement please refer to the website of the European Union.

A visa granted for longer than 90 days is only valid for entering and staying in Sweden. Please see “Visits for longer than 90 days”

Your application should be submitted in person to the Visa Application Centre operated by VFS Kenya Ltd. in Nairobi*

In countries where there is no Swedish diplomatic mission, Sweden is represented by another Schengen state

Who decides my case?

In most cases, the Embassy decides whether to grant a visa or not. The Embassy can also send the case on to the Migration Agency in Sweden for a decision.

How long does it take?

The time it takes to process an application at the Embassy varies but decisions are generally reached within 15 days.

Remember!
Make sure you are properly insured so that you are covered for any costs associated with an illness, accident, etc.

What if my application is turned down?

A decision to reject an application for an entry visa requires justification from the Embassy. This means that you will get information in the decision as to why your application was rejected. If you received a decision you are not satisfied with, you can submit a written appeal no later than 3 weeks from the day you received the decision.

How to appeal

In your appeal, write down what decision you are not satisfied with, and why and how you want it to be changed. If you have any documents that you didn’t submit earlier, you can supplement your case with them. Your appeal should be submitted to the visa application centre or to the Swedish Embassy. The Embassy will verify that the appeal came in on time and will go through the case again. You have to appeal within three weeks of being informed of the decision, otherwise you have to submit a new application.

If the embassy changes the decision

The decision can be changed if new information is presented. In that case you will be notified, and the entry visa placed in your passport.

If the Swedish mission abroad does not change the decision, it will be forwarded to the court

If the appeal came in on time and the authority that made the decision sees no reason to change the decision, the case will be forwarded as soon as possible. Your application, the decision, and all other documents submitted in the case will be sent electronically to the Administrative Court in Göteborg. The Administrative Court will then make a decision and notify the Swedish mission abroad. You will be notified via email directly from the Court.

Avoid other people selling services

Please note that the embassy only cooperates with VFS Global. The embassy has nothing to do with sellers outside the premises of the embassy or the VFS Global office who offer services for payment. No sellers can influence either the processing period or the decision.
