A name change made by a foreign authority is not valid.

Register your marriage and change your name
If you have married abroad you must register your marriage and change your name with the Swedish population register. It cannot be done by the Embassy.

The Swedish citizen must forward the form –
Change of surname together with the marriage certificate. Both parties have to sign the form if the Swedish citizen wishes to adopt the other party’s surname.

In order for the Swedish population register to be correct it is good practice to forward a copy of your passport if you are not registered as living in Sweden. Especially if your date of birth is not included on the marriage certificate.

Moving to the UK
If you plan to live abroad for more than a year or have lived for more than a year outside Sweden you must register your move with the Swedish population register. Find out more
