How to apply
It is recommended that an application for visa be lodged at the Swedish Consulate General at least 15 calendar days before the intended departure.
If an application is lodged less than 15 calendar days before the intended departure the Consulate General cannot guarantee that the decision will be decided in time for the intended departure.
When the Consulate General has made a decision we will contact you either by telephone, e-mail or fax to inform you of the decision. You will be provided with a copy of the decision either in person, by fax or e-mail. We would therefore ask you to include information on your application how we can reach you.
Residents in the city of Jerusalem shall apply in person at the Swedish Consulate General. An appointment is not necessary.
Residents of the West Bank should contact the Swedish Consulate General for an appointment in order to facilitate that they may apply in person. To obtain an appointment send an e-mail to:

In the e-mail, please include:
- Full name,
- Date of birth,
- Id-number,
- Purpose of the visit,
- Phone number where we can reach you.
Residents of Gaza can hand in their applications for visa at the UNDP office in Gaza city. To do so you are advised to obtain an appointment by calling Majda al-Shorafa at UNDP on (+972) 08-282 46 11.
An application should contain the following forms:
- An application form.
- A family details form.
- A required document form.
These three forms can be downloaded from the box to the right or can be obtained at the Swedish Consulate General. They should be filled in English or Swedish only. All documents must be signed by you.
The following supportive documents should also be present in the application:
- Copy of your passport (main pages) and pages with previous visas and entry/exit stamps.
- Copy of your ID-card.
- Copy of your unfolded ID slip.
- If you are working or studying: a letter confirming private business, letter from employer or from school stating that you have vacation and will return to your job or studies after the visit in Sweden. This document should be original and written and signed on company/ school document with letterhead included.
- Sweden demands that you have 370 SEK equivalent to 240 NIS, for each day of your visit in Sweden. That amount can in certain cases be lower for example for young children or if you stay with relatives or friends.
You must therefore add a copy of proof of sufficient funds to sustain you for the duration of the visit in and for the return. A proof might be a copy of your current bank statement or that of the individual inviting you or in the case of an organization inviting you, a written statement from them that they will cover all cost.
- Copy of a confirmed booking of roundtrip airline ticket for you. Do not pay for the ticket before the visa has been granted.
- Compulsory travel medical insurance for you, covering all Schengen countries, covers 30.000 Euros or 38.000 USD. A copy of the travel insurance may be handed in to the Consulate General after the visa has been granted.
This is a non-exhaustive list. If necessary you may be asked to provide additional documents or information.
If you lodge an application without one or more of the supporting documents or forms asked for your application could be refused.
A lodged application fulfilling the basic requirements and containing forms and supporting documents asked for does not guarantee that the application will be granted. For further information see: granted of denied?
If you are under 18, and travelling alone you must also submit:
- An original letter of consent signed by both your parents.
- Copies of your parents ID-cards, and attachment with your name listed.
If you are under 18, and travelling with one of your parents there must also be submitted:
- An original letter of consent signed by the other parent who has not intended to travel with you.
- A copy of that parents ID-card.
or
- If the parent you are travelling with has single custody, the original custody certificate must be shown to General Consulate staff upon applying. A copy of the custody certificate should be included in the application.
If your are applying to visit a relative or friend
- If you are applying to visit a relative or a friend an invitation should also be included in the application, in English or Swedish only. We recommend the use of the invitation that can be downloaded from the box to right.
- The relative or friend inviting you should also add his/her civic registration certificate (Svenska: personbevis) . This certificate can be obtained at the nearest tax office.
- If your relative or friend is paying for the travel and/or upkeep in Sweden a copy of his/her bank account should be included in your application. Sweden demands that you have 370 SEK, equivalent to 240 NIS, for each day of your visit in Sweden. That amount can in certain cases be lower for example for young children or if you stay with relatives or friends.
If you are applying to do a business or conference visit
- If you are applying for the purpose of a business meeting or a conference you should also fill out Appendix A in English or Swedish only. Appendix A can be downloaded from the box to the right.
- An invitation from the business partner or the conference organizer should also be included in the application, in English or Swedish only.
If you are applying for a visit to Sweden for medical treatment
- If your purpose for the are application is medical treatment in Sweden you should also fill out appendix C in English or Swedish only.

- Furthermore you should also inform the Consulate General why the medical treatment is not available to you where you live, and what efforts have been taken to obtain medical treatment in Israel, Egypt or Jordan.
Granted or refused?
Granted
If you are granted you can collect the visa in person or by way of a proxy/representative. This can be done Monday, Tuesday, Thursday or Friday from 10 – 12.
If you are granted a visa this does in itself not guarantee that you are allowed entry Sweden or any other area part of the Schengen territory. Upon your arrival at extern border, either in Sweden or in another member state your right to entry will be subject to verification by the authorities. This can include, among other, control of the travel document and visa sticker, that you have enough funds for the intended stay, the purpose of the visit and if you have a valid travel medical insurance.
Refused
The Consulate General will deny an application for visa if:
a) the applicant has a travel document that is false, counterfeit or forged,
b) the applicant has not provided justification for the purpose and conditions of the intended stay,
c) the applicant has not provided proof of sufficient funds, both for the duration of the intended stay and for the return to the country of origin or area of residence or third country into which he/she is certain to be admitted,
d) the applicant has already stayed for 90 days during the current six month period on the territory of the Schengen member states on the basis of a uniform visa or a visa with limited territorial validity,
e) the applicant is a person for whom an alert has been issued in SIS for the purpose of refusing entry,
f) the applicant is considered to be a threat to public policy, internal security or public health or to the international relations of any of the Schengen member states,
g) the applicant have not provided proof of holding adequate and valid travel medical insurance,
or
h) there are reasonable doubts as to the authenticity of the supporting documents submitted by the applicant or of the veracity of the content, the reliability of the statements made by the applicant or his/her intention to leave the territory of the Schengen member states before the expiry of the visa applied for.
If you are refused - how to appeal
If your application is refused the Consulate General will inform you by phone and through a copy of the decision sent to you to the e-mail or fax number submitted.
As of 5 April 2011 an visa refused can be appealed to the Migration Court in Gothenburg, Sweden.
To appeal you must submit a written appeal to the Consulate General. This appeal letter must have reached the Consulate General no later the 21 days after you where informed of the decision.
In the appeal letter you should note at the top of the page that it is an appeal, write your name and the number of case, which you will find at the top right corner on the first page of the decision. The letter should be addressed to:
The Migration Court in Gothenburg
But the letter must be sent to the Consulate General in Jerusalem.
In the appeal letter you should note why you are not satisfied with the decision and how you want it changed. If you have any documents that supports your position they should be added to the appeal letter.
a) When the appeal letter reach the Consulate General we will verify that the appeal has arrived within the stipulated time frame. If more than 21 days have passed since you were informed of our decision, the appeal will be rejected.
b) If the appeal arrived on time the Consulate General will go over the case again and see if the decision based on the appeal and supporting documents should be changed. If that is the case you will be notified and the visa will be affixed to your passport/travel document.
c) If the Consulate General comes to the conclusion that the decision should not be changed we will forward the appeal and the original file to as soon as possible to the Migration Court in Gothenburg, Sweden who will decide if you are to be granted a visa or to uphold the decision of the Consulate General.
The Consulate General will notify you of the decision of the Migration Court.
If the Migration Court in Gothenburg reject your appeal and if you are not satisfied with the decision you can ask the Migration Court of Appeal, located in Stockholm, to hear your case.
The Migration Court of Appeal is the final instance for the reconsideration in full of aliens and nationality cases. Leave to appeal is required. It is granted if a decision by the court is required as guidance on how similar cases are to be assessed (known as a precedent) or if there are extraordinary reasons for hearing the appeal.
