How to apply

Most people applying for a residence permit to study at a university or college in Sweden can use the online application on the Swedish Migration Agency website.

How to proceed (for paper applications, see further down):

1. Prepare the documents
Check which documents and personal data you need. The Swedish Migration Agency gives priority to applications that are completed in full, and you get a decision sooner.

2. Applying
Follow the Swedish Migration Agency’s instructions. You attach documents electronically and pay the application fee using a VISA card or a MasterCard. Family members use the same online application if they apply at the same time as you. The online application goes directly to the Swedish Migration Agency for processing followed by a decision.

3. Wait for the decision
When the Swedish Migration Agency has reached its decision, you will be informed of this by email. You get the actual decision by visiting the Embassy. Bring your passport when collecting the decision.

4. Arrange for a residence permit card
If you are granted a residence permit for more than three months, you will be issued with a residence permit card.


You will have to visit the Embassy in order to have your photo and fingerprints taken for the residence permit card. You can do so either while waiting for a decision or after you have been granted a residence permit. You can come to the Embassy for biometrics during regular opening hours, Monday - Thursday 09.00 - 11.30.

Bring the passport that you used when applying for a residence permit.

Once the residence permit card has been delivered to the Embassy it will be sent out to you by mail to the address that you have provided ín the application process. You will have to show your passport in order to receive the residence permit card.

Applying on a paper form

If you cannot or do not want to apply online, you can fill in a paper form that you submit in person to the Embassy. However, it will be a longer procedure until the decison is made, as these do not go straight to the Migration Agency.

2. Pay the application fee
All applicants have to pay the application fee through the Embassy bank account before applying and bring the receipt to the Embassy together with the application. The fee must be paid to the Embassy bank account in ANZ Bank, account number: 6143432, account name Embassy of Sweden-UM. Please note that the Fee is non-refundable.

3. Present the application at the Embassy
Bring the completed application form with you, together with all the required documents and a receipt of payment for the fee.

You need to book an appointment to hand in your application.

4. Wait for the decision
The Swedish Migration Agency informs the Embassy of its decision. The Embassy then contacts you. Bring your passport when collecting the decision.

5. Arrange for a residence permit card
If you are granted a permit for more than three months, you will receive a residence permit card. You arrange for the card in the same way as described above under ‘Applying online’.

Important information*

It is the Migration Agency who decides whether or not you will get a residence permit. The Embassy has no influence over the Migration Agency's decision. Once the decision has been taken, it is sent to the Embassy. The applicant will be contacted by the Embassy by phone or e-mail.

If your application is rejected, you may appeal the decision within three weeks of the date you received the decision. You must send the appeal to the Migration Agency by post and not through the Embassy in Hanoi. If you have given someone in Sweden a power of attorney to represent you, he or she may write your appeal and send it to the Migration Agency.
