An example of modern partnership cooperation

The Swedish CENTEC Vietnam is an example of modern partnership-driven development cooperation of the 21st century. To date, Sweden has established three CENTEC institutions – in China, in Southern Africa and in Vietnam (since March 2011). CENTEC aims at identifying and supporting potential partnerships – and to act as a ’brooker’ between partners in Sweden and abroad – to strengthen a more sustainable development in the fields of environment, energy and climate change.

Vietnam has undergone fast economic progress in recent years. This has certainly contributed to improved livelihoods for many of the poor but, in other hand, has also created significant pressure on the environment. Further, Vietnam is among the five countries in the world that are most affected by climate change.

Internationally, Sweden has a good reputation of advanced technologies and environmental management. This has drawn increasing interest from Vietnamese actors in entering into partnerships with Swedish potential partners. To strengthen and to increase the number of sustainable partnerships between Vietnamese and Swedish actors, Swedish Embassy has decided to establish the Swedish CENTEC Vietnam in Hanoi.

Roles and objectives of CENTEC

• To make Swedish green technology and environmental management approaches visible in Vietnam;
• To make Vietnam environmental demands visible in Sweden and thereby encourage a wider engagement in finding viable solutions;
• To support sound environmental management including concrete innovative technologies as well as system oriented and integrated solutions;
• To contribute to a win-win-win situation, strengthening both Vietnamese and Swedish partners in the field of environment.

Approach and implementation

CENTEC works with three clusters of partnerships: authorities, institutions and the private sector. The private sector has played a key role in Sweden in the search for innovative solutions of environmental problems. CENTEC wants to support processes where these solutions are made available also in Vietnam.

Supporting partnerships

Sweden has been supporting development processes in Vietnam for over 40 years, whereby the two countries have developed a close relation covering a wide spectrum of issues. Sweden has become a strong “brand” in Vietnam.

Swedish CENTEC Vietnam wants to build on the long history of partnerships between the countries and stimulate new relationships in the field of environmental sound technologies. Swedish authorities, institutions and not least the private sector can contribute to continued positive development and strengthened sustainability in Vietnam.
