The recent growth and expansion of the aviation industry in Tanzania and East Africa has opened up new markets for innovative companies such as Safegate from Sweden to tap into the growth and develop their products and services.
In an exclusive interview with Swedish Embassy at the 3rd Annual Africa Airport expansion Summit held at Serena hotel in Dar es Salaam on 19th and 20th Feb, the Managing Director of Safegate Germany, Mr Alexander Herring said, “East Africa is an important market for Safegate as we acquired in last few years quite some references often by replacing competitors’ product/systems.”
He said Tanzania is specifically promising as Safegate can provide specific technologies, which will be required for future upgrading of the Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA). “Meaning not only advance visual docking systems, but also so called Individual Lamp Monitoring and Control System ILCMS, a technology in which Safegate is a pioneer. But we are also looking into large expansion projects of regional airports for which we have recently quoted our lighting systems,” he added.
Safegate is present in nearly all EAC countries, including Kenya, Burundi and Tanzania (recently with docking systems at JNIA and Airfield lighting in Zanzibar commissioned in Dec 2014). The company is specifically looking into new Kigali airport, Bugusera International Airport, a Greenfield airport in Rwanda, but also looking into the modernization and upgrading of Entebbe airport.
Mr Herring said, “We believe in large growth in East Africa and have started to set-up an office in Nairobi to follow up on large projects at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and others around the East Africa region.”
Safegate Group is an international company with headquarters in Malmö, Sweden and Safegate offices or representatives in more than 70 countries around the world. The company provides the airport industry with efficient solutions for safer aircraft movements including operations, control and handling of aircraft on the ground, airborne aircraft close to the airport and ground vehicles at the airport.
At the 3rd Annual Africa Airport Expansion Summit, in which Swedish Embassy participated; government officials, construction companies, airlines, airport authorities and operators had in-depth discussions with consultants, architects, equipment providers and service groups on better ways to explore the market and support project development.
Tanzania is spearheading the development of the airport industry with an upcoming expansion and development of 10 airports.
