Raoul Wallenberg memorial evening

As a part of the official Raoul Wallenberg year, a memorial event took place on 9 September to honor Wallenberg's deeds and memory. The ceremony was held in the Dohány Street Synagouge and was organized by the March of the Living Foundation.

The ceremony was attended by, amongst others, Holocaust survivors, relatives of Raoul Wallenberg, representatives of the Hungarian government and the diplomatic community, representatives from various faiths and denominations as well as many others. The ceremony commenced with the national anthems of Sweden, Israel and Hungary performed by organist Xaver Varnus, followed by a short introductory movie about Raoul Wallenberg's life and his courageous actions to save Hungarian Jews during the Second World War, engaging speeches and beautiful music pieces and the inauguration of the Raoul Wallenberg Memorial Park.

The memorial speeches, all emphasizing the importance of Wallenberg's actions for the past, present and future, were held by the Managing Director of the Federation of Jewish Communities in Hungary Mr. Gusztáv Zoltai, Raoul Wallenberg's niece Ms. Louise von Dardel, the Ambassador of Sweden H.E. Ms. Karin Olofsdotter, the Ambassador of the State of Israel H.E. Mr. Ilan Mor, and the President of the Republic of Hungary and Patron of the Raoul Wallenberg Memorial Year H.E. Mr. János Áder.

The memorial evening ended with the inauguration of the renovated Raoul Wallenberg Memorial Park and unveiling of its appertaining memorial plaque in the synagogue courtyard.
