BUILDING RESILIENCE THROUGH PARTICIPATION

26-27 March 2018 at United Nations Conference Centre in Bangkok, Thailand

The 2018 edition of the Embassy of Sweden’s Annual Regional Workshop is hosted in collaboration with United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), and will aim for a meaningful conversation and action around the theme of “Building resilience through participation”.

The workshop is held back-to-back with the Asia-Pacific Forum for Sustainable Development (APFSD), organized by ESCAP from 28-30 March which is held under the 2018 theme for follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, “Transformation towards Sustainable and Resilient Societies”. Resilience is key to sustainable development in Asia and the Pacific – a region exposed to a multitude of environmental, climate, social and economic risks.

To highlight the importance of inclusiveness in achieving resilience and sustainable development, the workshop will address the role of participation to strengthen resilience – the ability of individuals, communities, businesses, countries or regions to survive, respond, adapt and develop in the face of stress and shocks, convert risks into opportunities, while addressing the underlying root causes of risks, and even transform when conditions require it. We would like to use this regional workshop 2018 to highlight the significance of participation when building resilience, explore successful participatory models and find new, innovative participatory approaches for building resilience. The emphasis on participation also connects with the 2019 theme of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, “Empowering people and ensuring inclusiveness and equality”.

Together with other experts and stakeholders from the region and beyond, the partner organizations of the Swedish Regional Development Cooperation in Asia and the Pacific will be in the limelight, sharing perspectives and experiences from their diverse sectors. The purpose is to provide an opportunity for participants to get to know each other’s work, in order to co-create and strategize for improved and inclusive ways of working to build resilience in the region.

The workshop will have two objectives:

  1. 1.       To enhance the implementation of the Strategy for Sweden´s regional development cooperation in Asia and the Pacific through cooperation and co-creation between partner organizations.
  2. 2.       To support the Asia-Pacific region and countries to implement Agenda 2030 and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, through linking to the theme of the APFSD and the Regional Roadmap for implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in Asia and the Pacific.

The Strategy for Sweden’s regional development cooperation encourages mutual interaction between human rights, democracy, gender equality, environment and climate change and increased regional collaboration for poverty reduction and sustainable development in Asia and the Pacific.

We welcome all participants in this year’s workshop to be actively engaged to find paths to jointly deliver effectively on their goals, the Agenda 2030 and to foster participatory approaches to build resilience.
