Applying

The quickest and easiest way of applying for a residence permit to study at universities and colleges in Sweden is to apply online. Online applications go directly to the Swedish Migration Board and are given priority, if completed in full.

The Swedish Migration Board website provides information about what is required to obtain a residence permit, as well as the possibility of completing an online application.

If you wish to study elsewhere than at university or college, you present the application documents at the Swedish embassy in person instead. Within the Schengen area this service is offered at the embassy in Athens, Berlin, Madrid, Paris and Rome.

You can submit your application in the Schengen area, provided you are lawfully residing in the area.

Residence permit card

If you are granted a permit for more than three months, you will be issued with a residence permit card. As you already are lawfully residing in the Schengen zone you should travel to Sweden and arrange for the residence permit card there. Visit the Swedish Migration Board website to book an appointment online, to have your photograph and fingerprints taken. Hence, if you apply on line you do not normally have to contact or visit the embassy.

EU/EEA-citizens and long-term residents

If you are an EU citizen, you are entitled to study in Sweden without a residence permit. Furthermore, special rules apply if you have a residence permit and long-term resident status in another EU country. Read about the rules at the Swedish Migration Board website.
