Residence permit for studies in Sweden

A person who wishes to study at a university or college in Sweden for a period longer than three months must have a residence permit. The permit must be complete and entered into the passport before entry into Sweden.

Applications for residence permit can be submitted to:

– the Embassy of Sweden in New Delhi.

– or to the Swedish Consulate in Chennai, Mumbai, Kolkata, Colombo or Kathmandu

Students are advised to apply at the Consulates closest to their place of residence.

Documents to be submitted in duplicate

  • Application forms duly completed and signed (Form No. 105031),
  • Two photographs according to the instructions,
  • Valid passport along with two photocopies (of pages 1, 2 and last),
  • Admission letter from university/college. Study should be fulltime,
  • One must be able to show a minimum of SEK 7 300 per month for 10 months in a year . If one can show that one will be receiving free board and/or lodging, for instance, this sum is reduced. Applicant is requested to show proof of financial support for the entire planned study period. Documentation certifying one's own bank assets (in the form of bank certificate and statement of accounts for the last six months) or documents certifying that one has received a scholarship or in some other similar manner must be provided,
  • Accommodation must be arranged for in Sweden,
  • A comprehensive health insurance which is valid in Sweden if applicant intends to study for a period of one year or less.

Application fee is to be paid by demand draft favouring "Embassy of Sweden (Visa)", New Delhi.

The application is in most cases forwarded to the Swedish Migration Board in Sweden for decision.
