Research is fundamental for understanding and tackling the challenges that Tanzania and the World face today. It is the intention of Tanzania to perform advanced scientific research in areas that are important for development in the country and the region at large. Accordingly, the new support emphasizes research on natural resources and the environment, renewable energy, commerce and entrepreneurship, urban planning and health systems. It involves collaboration with Swedish Universities and Research Institutions in Gothenburg, Stockholm, Uppsala and Umeå.
Research Co-operation between Tanzania and Sweden dates back to 1977. The new agreement will support research-strengthening activities at UDSM, ARU, and MUHAS. Moreover, support will be also given to the Tanzanian Council for Science and Technology (COSTECH) to improve research management and promotion at national level now that Tanzania has decided to commit 1% of GDP to research.
The already ongoing Research Co-operation between Sweden and Tanzania has raised the academic level of teachers/post-graduate programmes, and contributed to develop IT and library services.
The Agreement was signed today at the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs, by Mr. Ramadhani M. Khijjah, the Permanent Secretary and H.E. Mr. Staffan Herrström, Ambassador of Sweden to Tanzania on behalf of their respective Governments.
