Meeting Sweden at Edinburgh International Book Festival

Summer 2009, eight of Sweden's best contemporary writers were presented at Edinburgh International Book Festival - the world's largest and most dynamic literary festival. Four of them had alreday been published in English and the other four were introduced to UK readers for the first time. The Swedish writers appeared on stage over the weekend of 21-23 August in a unique dialogue with their UK counterparts. It was the first time there had been such a focus on Swedish writing in the UK.

From literary lions Henning Mankell and Per Wästberg of the Swedish Academy and the Nobel Committee for Literature to exciting young poet Johannes Anyuru and star of children’s fiction Annika Thor, the programme introduced UK readers to a diverse and exciting line-up of literary talent.

The aim of this Swedish UK co-operation was to create literary encounters, dialogue and discussion around translation and the importance of reading literature from other cultures.

The authors appearing together on stage were:

Johannes Anyuru and Nadeem Aslam
Annika Thor and Anne Fine
Marjaneh Bakhtiari and Roma Tearne
Eva Runefelt and Michael Symmons Roberts
Klas Östergren and John Burnside
Per Wästberg and Michael Holroyd
Fredrik Sjöberg and Adam Foulds
Henning Mankell appeared on his own.

An anthology with extracts from the work of the authors presented at the festival, with a preface by Sir Michael Holroyd, President of the Royal Society of Literature, will be published by The Swedish Book Review in co-operation with the Embassy of Sweden and the Swedish Arts Council. The texts for the anthology have been translated by some of the foremost translators of Swedish literature into English. For pictures and biographies of the authors please see under - Related files
