Closing of the Consulate General and Opening of Honorary Consulate General in New York

The Consulate General in New York closed in December 2009, due to a decision by the Swedish Government. In January 2010, an honorary Consulate General opened. The new Consulate reports to the Embassy in Washington, DC. and its jurisdiction includes the states of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, an area where a large concentration of Swedish citizens can be found. The Honorary Consulate General provides certain services to Swedish citizens and conducts commercial, cultural and public affairs.

Honorary Consul General
The Honorary Consul General of Sweden in New York is David E. R. Dangoor. He has an extensive background in international business and is a member of the Board of Directors of the Swedish-American Chamber of Commerce in New York. 

Services for Swedes
As of January 4, 2010, regular passport applications may not be submitted in New York or at any other Swedish consulate in the U.S. All Swedish passport applicants in the U. S. must report in person to the Embassy of Sweden in Washington in order to be digitally photographed at the time of application. However, from time to time and announced in advance, the Embassy organizes local opportunities to apply for passports in New York. In all cases, applicants may pick up issued passports, identity cards and driver’s licenses at the Consulate General in New York.

The Consulate General can also issue emergency passports and assist with the registration of names of newborn children, as well as provide assistance to Swedish citizens in consular emergencies or who have been detained or imprisoned.

For persons residing in New York, New Jersey or Connecticut, visa applications with all required documents may be delivered in person during visiting hours or sent directly to the following address:

Cultural, Commercial and Public Affairs
The new Consulate General continues to conduct cultural, commercial and public affairs including coordination and support of events to showcase Swedish culture and promote Swedish interests in the New York area. The Consulate General also provides information about Sweden to the public and media, and facilitates exchange between organizations, companies and institutions in Sweden and the U.S.
