Closing of the Consulate General and Opening of Honorary Consulate in New York

The Swedish Government has decided to close the Consulate General in New York in January 2010 and to open an honorary consulate general, which will provide certain services to Swedish citizens and conduct commercial, cultural and public affairs.

Honorary Consulate General
The honorary consulate general will open by January 4 and will report to the Embassy in Washington DC. The honorary consul general of Sweden in New York will be David Dangoor. He has an extensive background in international business and is a member of the Board of Directors of the Swedish-American Chamber of Commerce in New York. 

Passports, National Identity Cards and Driver's Licenses
The last day to apply for passports or national identity cards at the Consulate General of Sweden in New York will be December 28. After that date, pending applications will be transferred and all new applicants referred to the Embassy in Washington DC. It will still be possible to pick up new passports, identity cards and driver's licenses at the honorary consulate in New York.

Visas, Residence and Work Permits
The last day to apply for visas and residence/work permits at the Consulate General of Sweden in New York will be December 18. After that date, pending applications will be forwarded to the Embassy in Washington DC. The honorary consulate will accept visa and residence permit applications as of January 4.

Commercial and Cultural Affairs
Three staff members at the honorary consulate will be responsible for Swedish commercial, cultural and public affairs in New York, working closely with the Embassy in Washington DC.
