Year of foundation: 1336 (when the city privileges were received, the city is in reality much older)Population: Approx. 31 000 Area: ca. 5,9 km2How to get to Strängnäs from Stockholm: You can easily get to Strängnäs by train from the capital.
I have lived in the city of Strängnäs for the last 10 years. It is a nice small-town idyll, very suitable for the whole family.
Strängnäs is situated by the lake Mälaren and is best experienced during the summer. The cityscape is dominated by the 110 metre high cathedral, which oldest parts date from the 13th century. Communications are well developed and it is, for example, easy to go to Stockholm by train from Strängnäs. Parts of the central town, especially around the cathedral, consists of older development and is well suited for walking tourism. Even the port and the nearby mill are well worth a visit.
During summertime the chronicle plays, on the occasion of the selection of Gustav Vasa as King outside the cathedral on the 6th of June 1523, are held in Strängnäs. The 6th of June later became the national day of Sweden.
The municipality of Strängnäs also contains the town of Mariefred with the castle Gripsholm and a narrow gauge railway museum. In the middle of July it is possible to visit the knight days in Mariefred with their mediaeval market and tilting tournament.
From both Strängnäs and Mariefred there are tours with a steamboat to the Viking town of Birka on the island Björkö in Mälaren. Most welcome to Strängnäs!Peter Möller Assistant to the Defence Attaché
