June 9 UPR: Canada

Swedish statement delivered by Counsellor Lina van der Weyden. Item 6, UPR-report on Canada

Mme Chair,

Allow me to extend the gratitude of  Sweden to the Canadian delegation for having participated actively in the UPR dialogue. We only take the floor since we were not able to speak in the review in February. We would like to participate with two brief comments:

First;. We thank the Ambassador for having addressed violence against women in the opening statement. We note that the recommendations on this issue of violence against women, including indigenous women, enjoy the support of the government. We appreciate that also our recommendation was taken into account, even though it was only posted on the extranet, and not formally delivered during the session.

Second; In February, a couple of countries raised the issue of violence against children, which is of great concern to us. We note - in the addendum - that those recommendations enjoy the support of the Canadian government and would encourage the government to also include a prohibition of corporal punishment.

Thank you, Mme Chair.
