My hometown – Kiruna

What to see and do in this town?
In the summer, watch the midnight sun from the mountain Luossavaara, situated 4 km from Kiruna. From the mountain top you are greeted by a breathtaking view, stretching all the way to Sweden’s highest mountain, Kebnekaise. It is possible to experience the midnight sun between the 30th of May to the 14th of July.

In the winter, experience the northern lights while visiting the Icehotel in Jukkasjärvi, situated 17 km from Kiruna and open from December to April. In the centre of Kiruna a visit to its church is more than worthwhile - in the year 2000 it was voted Sweden’s most beautiful building.
The world’s largest subterranean mine, LKAB, is a site worth visiting while in Kiruna. Tours of their exhibition mine, InfoMine, take you 540 meters below ground level. Because of the mine, the whole town of Kiruna will be moved completely in a few years time.

If you are longing for a seriously exotic vacation then you can postpone your trip to Kiruna with a few years. You will then be able to travel from Kiruna into space. In a few years time, Virgin Galactic plans to start offering space trips from Kiruna on their “Space Ship 2”.

Is there something special to bring home from Kiruna?
Kiruna offers a wide array of Sami handicrafts and various delicacies made of reindeer meat.
