Swedish Presidency of the European Union

Sweden's EU Presidency in Nairobi

Sweden assumes the EU Presidency

Sweden assumes the rotating Presidency of the European Union on Wednesday 1st of July 2009. To mark this event the Swedish Ambassador holds a press conference in Nairobi to present the global as well as local priorities concerning Kenya, Somalia and the UN, for the forthcoming period.

The European Union constitutes a unique economic and political cooperation between 27 democratic European countries. The EU Presidency leads the work of the EU Council of Ministers at all levels, and represents the Union in relations with non-member states as well as international organisations. The EU coordination in Nairobi, chaired by the Embassy of Sweden, deals with broad relations between the Union and Kenya, the situation in Somalia and negotiations in UNEP and UN-HABITAT.

Sweden will hold the Presidency for a period of six months, from 1st of July to up to 31st of December 2009.
