June 16 HRC 11

Swedish Statement held by Second Secretary Karin Stenson on June 16 2009 at the Interactive Dialogue under Item 9 of the Human Rights Council

Mr President,

Sweden aligns herself with the statement made by the Czech Republic on behalf of the European Union.

Sweden would like to thank to the Special Rapporteur on contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia, and related intolerance for his first report presented to this Council.

We particularly want to thank you, Mr Muigai, for your very comprehensive table outlining the commitments of Member States in the outcome document of the Durban Review Conference. We agree that a substantive challenge lay ahead for states when it comes to the implementation of the Durban Review Outcome. You recommend that states adopt concrete targets for implementation. Could you please give some examples on how these targets could look?

We read with great interest your brief summary of your explanation on the connection between racism and genocide where you remind us about when extreme cases of racism has led to terrible human catastrophes. How do you believe that your work as Rapporteur could be used in efforts to prevent genocide?

Mr Muigai, let me extend our best wishes for the work ahead of you.

Thank you.
