How to apply for a residence permit as a co-applicant to a student

If you are planning to move to Sweden to live for a limited period of time with your husband/wife/ partner or parent who is studying in Sweden, you should apply for a residence permit before you go to Sweden.

You can apply for a residence permit at the Consulate General of Sweden in Shanghai. You may be interviewed by telephone after you have presented your application. When the Consulate General has all the necessary documentation, your case may be forwarded to the Swedish Migration Board.

The Consulate General will inform you when the decision is ready. If you are granted residence permit it will be entered into your passport. You cannot travel to Sweden and wait for the decision there.

You are required to enclose the following documents with your application (note that all documents must be submitted in original):

  • Two passport photos taken within the past six months. Photos that do not conform to these standards will be rejected and may cause delay in processing the application.

  • A valid passport and two photocopies of the identity page of the passport. We only accept passports which have been signed by the holder of the passport. Please note that even if you are not yet a holder of a valid passport it is possible to apply for a residence permit. You can forward your passport to the Embassy later.
