Visa for a long period of stay (D-visa)
Another type of visa is the D-visa which may be granted for stays exceeding 90 days during six months if there are special circumstances. A D-visa may be granter for a maximum stay in Sweden of one year and may be valid for one or multiple entries. Please note that a D-visa is a national visa and valid only for stay in Sweden. If you intend to travel through other countries to/from Sweden with a D-visa you should contact the countries you intend to travel through to get information if you need an additional permit. Special circumstances may for instance be parents who visit their children in Sweden and need to stay for a longer consecutive period. The purpose of the stay can only be to visit.
Handling fee, processing time and application documents that should be submitted are the same as for visa applications for relatives and friends (see above), except that there is no requirement of travel medical insurance. The Embassy does though recommend that the applicants has a valid travel medical insurance as the costs for medical treatment may be very large if there is an emergency. The passport must be valid for at least the same period as the visa.
