D-visa

Visa for a long period of stay (D-visa)

Another type of visa is the D-visa which may be granted for stays exceeding 90 days during six months if there are special circumstances. Special circumstances may for instance be parents who visit their children in Sweden and need to stay for a longer consecutive period. The purpose of the stay can only be to visit. A D-visa may be granted for a maximum stay in Sweden of one year and may be valid for one or multiple entries. Please note that a D-visa is a national visa. If you have a D-visa you may travel through the Schengenarea in the same way as holders of residence permits, for three months within a six month period. This rule entered into force at the same time as the Visa Code.

Please note that all categories of applicants should pay a fee because a D- visa is a national visa, therefore the visa facilitation agreement cannot be applied. Processing time and application documents that should be submitted are the same as for visa applications for relatives and friends. Please contact the migration section if you have questions about the consular fee.

There is no requirement of travel medical insurance. The Embassy does though recommend that the applicants has a valid travel medical insurance as the costs for medical treatment may be very large if there is an emergency.

The passport must be valid for at least the same period as the visa.
