May 4 UPR: Monaco

Swedish statement delivered by Counsellor Lina van der Weyden in the interactive dialogue on Monaco

Mr President,

Allow me to extend the gratitude of Sweden to His Excellency Mr Franck Biancheri and his delegation, for taking an active part in our dialogue here today and for having addressed the question that we had submitted in advance. We would like to raise two issues:

First; We noted that the Human Rights Committee in 2008 expressed concern about the broad, ill-defined definition of terrorist acts in the Criminal Code, in particular about the lack of clarity regarding the definition of the term “environmental terrorist”. In view of their suggestions, we would recommend further measures to ensure that the definition of terrorist acts in Monaco is in line with its human rights obligations.

Second; We recognize the efforts that have been made to allow equal treatment of men and women in Monaco and the clarification provided in your presentation here today. We would recommend to continue these efforts, with a view to ensure men and women the same legal rights in all areas of legislation, including those related to requirements to acquire Monegasque nationality.

Thank you, Mr President.
