"Societies in transition" – MENA workshop at SRII
In cooperation with the Swedish Institute in Alexandria, the Swedish Research Institute in Istanbul (SRII) is arranging a workshop on “Cultural heritage and identity in the contemporary urban context" on 3-5 December. The participants are twenty researchers from Sweden, Middle East-North Africa (MENA) and Turkey.
"Irregular Migration, Informal Economy and Pathways to Decent Work" - workshop 4-5 December in Istanbul
With support from the Consulate General the workshop is organized in Istanbul by the Institute for Research on Migration, Ethnicity and Society (REMESO), University of Linköping, the SALTSA programme, University of Uppsala and the University of Ankara. It is a follow-up of the migration joint research project initiated in 2002 by Marmara University and the National Institute for Working Life in Sweden.

Mid-term conference for Sida’s municipality project Tusenet in Amasya 3-4 December
The Tusenet project is part of the Swedish programme for cooperation with Turkey which aims at supporting Turkey’s reform process towards a membership in the European Union..
One major component of the programme is bilateral cooperation between local authorities in Turkey and Sweden. The Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions (SALAR) is contributing to the reform of the municipal sector and the development of its Turkish equivalent (the Union of Municipalities of Turkey (UMT).
The project is built on cooperation between six networks of Swedish-Turkish municipalities, involving 5 Swedish and 22 Turkish municipalities, and between SALAR and UMT.
Tusenet is implemented during 2006-2010.
"European Value Systems & European Cooperative Structures", seminar 4-6 December in Istanbul
This seminar is the sixth in a series of ten aiming to train municipal officers to take an active part in EU cooperation. This work is led by a Swedish project group, 3 L Project Management, which has a long experience of municipal work, EU-financed projects and work within EU networks.

"Home Not Home" in Diyarbakir and in Istanbul
“Home not Home” is an artistic cooperation between Intercult, Riksteatern, Swedish Travelling Exhibitions, Re:Orient and Sprong, a group of young people specializing in intercultural communication.
Home not Home, which is Sweden’s contribution to the European year for cross-cultural dialogue 2008, visits Diyarbakir and Istanbul in December.
The focus of the visit will be performances of the play “Against the wall” and showings of the artwork “Restore Hope: See me! A series of workshops, meetings and other activities are planned in collaboration with local partners. Their partners in Turkey are Anadolu Kültür, Diyarbakir National Theatre, Diyarbakir Art Center, Garajistanbul, Tütün Deposu, Bant, Apartment Project, Babylon, Talimhane Tiyatrosu. With the support of the Swedish Institute and the Consulate General of Sweden.

”King Karl XII and the three Oriental expeditions” – lecture at SRII 16 December
Dr Karin Ådahl’s lecture begins at 7 p.m.
Farewell reception in honour of Dr. Karin Ådahl
Mr. Torkel Stiernlöf, the Consul General, is arranging a farewell reception in honour of Dr. Karin Ådahl on 18 December. In January 2009, Dr. Ådahl is leaving her post as a director of SRII. She has served six years in Istanbul and will be succeeded by Prof. Elisabeth Özdalga.
Ka-Der ”Political Schools” in Istanbul and in Kayseri
The last schools before the local elections in March 2009, will be held in Istanbul 22-26 December 2008 and in Kayseri 26-30 January 2009.
Turkish films at the Göteborg International Film Festival
Turkish films will be screened at the Göteborg International Film Festival 23 January-2 Februari 2009.

The Consulate General will be made earthquake proof during 2009
The Swedish Palace will undergo an extensive renovation next year. The office will move in to temporary premises in the garden. The renovation is expected to be done by the end of 2009.
