Reducing poverty
The main aim of all development cooperation is to reduce poverty. In Uganda, this is governed by the Poverty Eradication Action Plan (PEAP), the governments plan for reducing poverty. This will hopefully raise the incomes of the poor and enhance their quality of life. It is also designed to create a more secure society with a solid foundation for economic growth.
Support to the private sector
The export of ecologically grown agricultural products is encouraged through support to the Export of Organic Products from Africa (EPOPA). This deals primarily with coffee, sesame seeds and cotton. Approximately 11,000 Ugandan coffee producers are included in the project. They export a total of approximately 1,000 tons of ecologically grown coffee to markets in Europe.
Sida is providing a guarantee for a project aiming to increase the number of telephones in Uganda. Having access to telephones will make life easier for the population in the country. Just four years ago, Uganda had the smallest number of telephones per inhabitant in Africa. At that time there were 4,000 telephones: now there are 311,000, plus a number of payphones running on solar power. The private company MTN Uganda, owned partially by Telia Overseas, is running this project.
