General information

In 2007 Sida earmarked funding support UNICEF interventions. UNICEF's water and sanitation activities reached out to four million people. The activities included, rehabilitation of water points and drilling of boreholes (700 water points were rehabilitated), water treatment and construction of latrines (1 500 latrines were constructed). More than 25 000 people have benefitted from the participatory health and hygiene education. In response to the acute water shortages in Bulawayo, UNICEF and its partners rehabilitated 29 out of 79 boreholes thus providing 6 000 m3 of water to the city daily. UNICEF plays a central role in humanitarian coordination, it leads working groups on nutrition, education, child protection and water and sanitation and has continued to respond to the needs of the Zimbabwean population affected by the complex humanitarian crisis. This one year support amounted to SEK 15 000 000, the whole amount was disbursed in 2007.
