General information
The Human Rights Trust of Southern Africa (SAHRIT) was founded in 1996 and was registered in 1997. The SAHRIT mission is to facilitate the development of a society that respects human rights, observes democratic principles, adheres to good governance norms and promotes a culture of tolerance in Southern Africa. Sida has since 1996 been supporting the Human Rights Trust of Southern Africa (SAHRIT), a Zimbabwe-based NGO with a regional mandate. SAHRIT works mainly in the area of human rights, good governance and anti-corruption and focuses on capacity building as well as applied research. The current Swedish support covers institutional support to SAHRIT, a regional police training programme in human rights, a programme aiming at assisting governments and NGOs to compile state reports and shadow reports, respectively, to human rights treaty bodies, and a series of three weeks human rights courses modelled on Sida’s ITP-courses, open for government officials and representatives from civil society and academic institutions in the Southern Africa region. The support to this programme is in the form of basket funding together with Denmark and Norway and the activity period ends in August 2008.
