Women's Participation in the Constitution Making Process

Sida is providing support to the constitutional process through the Women’s Coalition of Zimbabwe whose overall objective is to ensure the participation of both urban and rural women in Zimbabwe to contribute towards a more democratic and engendered new constitution of Zimbabwe. This is an opportunity provided to women by the establishment of the current transitional government.

The project is aimed at mobilising women of Zimbabwe and come up with minimum demands that should be included in the constitution. It is targeting female policy makers, parliamentarians, government leaders and traditional leaders in 7 provinces of Zimbabwe.   This fund  which will be administered and  managed by the Women’s Coalition secretariat and will be implemented by seven (7) Women’s Coalition member organisations in seven provinces during the period December  2009 to December  2010. (ZWLA, Musasa Project, Women’s Action Group, Women’s Trust, WILSA, ZWRCN, and WiPSU)

The objectives of the project are to:

  • Mobilize and raise awareness of at least 2450 women leaders in each province to participate actively in the constitutional process.
  • Give women comprehensive information on constitution making processes.
  • Prepare women to participate in the constitutional consultation processes and the referendum.
  • Raise awareness of women’s basic demands in the process.
  • Co-ordinate, network and mobilize women’s participation in the constitutional process.
  • Position women strategically to participate in the constitutional process.
  • Distribute materials to women on constitutional reform.
