Sida’s cooperation with UNICEF Zimbabwe is mainly through a National Action Plan for orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) for Zimbabwe and the contribution to the OVC Programme of Support is 43 MSEK over three years. UNICEF is currently reaching out to 100,000 OVC under the framework of the national action plan. UNICEF Zimbabwe is also working in the area of health, HIV/AIDS, education, children’s rights and protection, prevention of sexual and gender based violence, water and sanitation. Over two million children and women were reached through health and nutrition interventions which included immunization and HIV programmes. Gender based violence is one of the key challenges in the current humanitarian situation and in response UNICEF trained 1,500 teachers in gender, HIV and AIDS life skills and counselling in 18 districts. In addition UNICEF targeted 1 million children and 500,000 women through interventions that aim to protect children and women from sexual an economic exploitation. UNICEF and its partners supported 418 children with interim care and transport/reunification support at the Child Centre, Beitbridge Reception and Support Centre. Support was provided for the integration of OVC care and support into the home based care (HBC) programmes through the training of 2,000  HBC volunteers and 2,000 young people to reach a minimum of 50,000 OVC and chronically ill. In the area of education, more than 5,700 children out of school or at the risk of dropping out were identified and retained in schools.
UNICEF has provided intensive support in the water and sanitation sector through the nationwide coordination of activities and responses. UNICEF´s water and sanitation activities reached out to four million people. The activities included, rehabilitation of water points and drilling of boreholes (700 water points were rehabilitated) , water treatment and construction of latrines(1,500 latrines were constructed). More than 25,000 people have benefitted from the participatory health and hygiene education. In response to the acute water shortages in Bulawayo, UNICEF and its partners rehabilitated 29 out of 79 boreholes thus providing 6,000m3 of water to the city daily. UNICEF plays a central role in humanitarian coordination, it leads working groups on nutrition, education, child protection and water and sanitation and has continued to respond to the needs of the Zimbabwean population affected by the complex humanitarian crisis.
