The European Union must be the voice of freedom and the power of democracy. These were the words of the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Carl Bildt, in the Riksdag when he presented the Statement of Foreign Policy, the annual programmatic declaration that sets out Sweden's work in the world.

Sweden to contribute SEK 500 million to measures against deforestation
At the Oslo Climate and Forest Conference today, Sweden announced support totalling SEK 500 million for measures against deforestation. SEK 100 million will go to the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and its programmes for sustainable forestry, and at least SEK 400 million to bilateral support.

European Commission goes with Swedish proposal on a Digital Agenda for Europe
Today the European Commission adopted a Digital Agenda for Europe, a five-year programme the aims of which include increasing access to ICT services in society and enhancing trust and security for those using these services. Sweden has been a driving force in developing the proposal.

New Research Agreement between Sweden and Canada
An agreement regarding research collaboration between Canada and Sweden was signed on May 3, 2010. The agreement was signed in Stockholm, by Tobias Krantz, Minister for Higher Education and Research, Sweden, and Peter van Loan, Minister of International Trade, Canada.
“Sweden and Canada have a lot in common. We are both focused on research and innovation and there is continuing collaboration between researchers in both countries. The fact that we have now entered into a comprehensive agreement is yet another testament to our strong cooperation” Mr. Krantz said.

The trade agreement includes general research collaboration and is focused on areas of interest to the trade and industry in both countries, as well as the transfer of research results to the trade and industry. Vinnova and its Canadian counterpart, ISTP, will conduct  joint programs. Parallel to the agreement, two letters of intent were signed by the ministers concerning collaboration between Karolinska Institutet and the University of Toronto, as well as between Vetenskapsstaden in Stockholm and MaRS, a centre for entrepreneurship and innovation in life science in Toronto.
