Visiting Friends or Relatives in Sweden

The Consulate General of Sweden is currently experiencing a very high volume of Schengen visa application. In order for your application to be processed in a timely manner you must submit your complete application well in advance of your planned departure to the Schengen area. When applying for a visa to visit friends or relatives in Sweden, you must submit all of the following documents:
  • Application for Schengen Visa (form #119031), completed, signed  and dated.

  • Appendix D: Family Appendix for Applicants (form #201031).

  • Appendix E: Referee’s Appendix (form #213031). This form must be  filled in by your friends/relatives in Sweden and submitted along with  your application. Your friends/relatives must also submit a recent  extract of the population register (“personbevis”), obtainable at the local tax office.

  • National passport or other travel document, valid at least three months after the visa has expired.

  • 1 recent passport photo, in color, taken from the front with the face  depicted at a straight angle. Digital files and photocopies of passport  pictures will not be accepted.

  • Notarized copy of US Alien Registration Card or other valid resident visa (type A, E, F, G, H, I, J, K, L, O, or R). If you are a student or  researcher residing in the U.S., you must submit a completed INS  form I-20 or IAP-66.

  • A current bank statement in your name, proving that you have sufficient  funds to cover your trip (minimum $50 per day). If another person will be financing your trip, he/she must submit a recent bank statement and a letter of consent.

  • Proof of international medical insurance with a minimum coverage of $50.000. The insurance must be in your name, it must be valid within the entire Schengen area and it must include:
    – emergency medical assistance
    – emergency hospital care
    – transport to your home country for  medical reasons/repatriation

This information, including your name and the dates for which the insurance is valid, must be clearly stated - your insurance card is not sufficient. Please note that we do not encourage the purchase of insurance prior to the approval of your visa.

  • A copy of your flight itinerary. Please note that we do not encourage the purchase of airline tickets prior to the approval of your visa.

  • Letter from employer stating that you are employed and approved for  vacation. If you are self-employed, include a copy of your business  license and tax return. If you are a student, include a letter from the school verifying enrolment.

  • Letter of consent (original or notarized copy) signed by both parents if  the applicant is under the age of 18.

  • Application fee in the form of cash, or one money order/certified bank  check, payable to Consulate General of Sweden. We do not accept credit cards. If you want your passport returned to you with next-day courier service you must also include a shipping fee, or a pre-paid envelope.

In some cases, you may be asked to provide additional documentation.

NOTE: An entry visa does not automatically entitle the holder to enter the Schengen area.  A decision is made every time the traveller passes through a border control, as travellers must have (1) proof of sufficient funds to support themselves for the duration of their stay and their return, (2) travel medical insurance, and (3) documents indicating the purpose of their visit.
