Visa for visiting friends and/or relatives

On this page you can find information about documents required for visa to visit friends or relatives in Sweden.

Attention! All applicants including children (regardless of age) should submit the full set of required documents when applying for a visa.

The Embassy will not consider visa applications, additional or completing documents sent to the Embassy by post, fax or e-mail. Please do not send invitations or extracts from the Swedish population register to the Embassy by fax!

Documents required:

  • Application for a Schengen visa (English or Swedish), completed, dated and signed.

  • A written invitation (Bilaga E in English or in Swedish), dated and signed, from the host person (referee) containing information:
    about  the invited person: 
      -name, surname, date of birth, sex,    citizenship
      -passport or travel document particulars
      -time and purpose of journey, number of entries
      -names of minor children accompanying the invited person
    about the inviting person:
      -name, surname, address and contact information.

  • Familjebevis (personbevis) - an extract from the Swedish population register for the referee. The referee orders this form from the Swedish National Tax Agency (Skatteverket) and it has to be not more than 3 month old.

  • Copy of passport's identification page of the inviting person.

  • Passport and a copy of its identification page. The passport must be valid for at least 3 months after the scheduled return.

  • Foreigners living in Russia must have proof of (legal residence in Russia) registration.

  • Proof of sufficient financial means (bank statement) to support yourself during your stay (not less than 40 EUR or 370 SEK per day). If the referee in Sweden guarantees the upkeep you do not have to submit this document.

  • Certificate from your current employer stating current position, your salary and the duration of employment and that you are entitled to vacation. For students a school or university certificate.

  •  Medical insurance, valid in all Schengen states with coverage amount at least of 30 000 EUR or 35 000 USD.
      -in case of a single visit the insurance should cover the whole period of stay
      -for multiple entry visits the insurance must cover at least the first visit.
    Note! All following visits should be covered by medical insurance.
      -the insurance could be provided by the inviting person in Sweden. This information should be mentioned in the invitation letter and a copy of the policy has to be attached.

  • Two [2] recently taken (not older than 6-months) colour photographs (35 x 45 mm) for all applicants, including minors.
    The photograph must be:
      -of natural colouring, taken against a plane, white background
      -showing full face and facing square into the camera, eyes open and clearly visible not covered by heavy frames
      -no tinted lenses and no flash reflections on the glasses, avoid red eye effect
      -without hat or other head covering (unless for cultural or religious reasons)
      -high resolution and quality printout.

Applications with photographs that do not conform to these standards will be refused.

For children below 18 who travel alone or with one of the parents:

 - a copy of a birth certificate of the child
 - if the child is entered in the passport of his parent, a copy of the parent's passport (the identification page and the page with child’s personal particulars are required)
 - a copy of a written consent stamped by a notary public from both parents (one of the parents) or the legal guardian of the child
 - a copy of the internal passport (the identification page) from both parents (one of the parents) or the legal guardian of the child
