Self-employment

If you stay in Sweden for more than three months in order to start a company or enter into a company partnership you must have a residence permit.

You can send in your application by post, submit it yourself or by proxy.

One week after submitting the application you must book a time for a personal interview at the Migration Office of the Embassy of Sweden and at the same time you will be informed by the handling officer about the missing documents which you must submit at the personal interview.

If you have sent your application by post you have to call the Migration Office of the Embassy two weeks after. The handling officer will check the status your case.

All applicants, including children, must come to the booked personal interview. At that time your documents will be controlled, your photo will be taken and a short interview will be performed.

NOTE: All document should be submitted in two copies.

You must submit the following documents and information

  • A commercial evaluation is needed in order to establish that your business plans are realistic. In addition, we must determine whether your business is expected to achieve satisfactory profitability. There must be a documentary evidence that you have an access to the capital needed to establish or purchase a company.

  • You must be able to support yourself and your family for at least one year in Sweden.

  • You must supply a detailed documentation of your business plans. You must submit a market forecast, a profit and a liquidity budget and a properly budgeted balance sheet. You must also give the details of your customer references, banking connections, experience in the field concerned and any training or education you may have received. If you have purchased an existing company, you must enclose the two most recent annual reports with your application.

  • You must also enclose a report/statement of opinion from an approved/authorized accountant in Sweden concerning your company plans. This should make clear whether the plans are realistic and whether a company is expected to make a reasonable profit. In this respect you have to pay the accountant’s costs by yourself.

  • Application form, completed, dated and signed in (English or Swedish).

  • Passport or other travel document and a copy of its identification page.

  • Internal passport and copies of all pages in the passport (if a Russian citizen).

  • Three [3] recently taken (not older than 6-months) colour photographs (35 x 45 mm) for all applicants, including minors.
    The photograph must be:
    – of natural colouring, taken against a plane, white background
    – showing full face and facing square into the camera, eyes open and clearly visible not covered by heavy frames
    – no tinted lenses and no flash reflections on the glasses, avoid red eye effect
    – without hat or other head covering (unless for cultural or religious reasons)
    – high resolution and quality printout.


Photographs that do not conform to these standards will be rejected and may cause delay in processing the application.

Co-applicants:

Family members of employees may be granted a residence permit for the same duration as the residence and work permit granted to the employee. If the permit is valid for at least six months, family members may also be granted a work permit.
Children over the age of 21 cannot be granted a residence permit unless they are financially dependent upon the parent.

All documents should be submitted in two copies.

The following documents are required:

  • application for co-applicants, completed, dated and signed in English or Swedish
  • a copy of the written offer of employment in Sweden of the main applicant
  • passport or other travel document, signed and valid and a copy of its identification page
  • the original and a copy of a marriage certificate (for spouses)
  • three [3] recently taken (not older than 6-months) colour photographs (35 x 45 mm) for all applicants, including minors.
    The photograph must be:
    – of natural colouring, taken against a plane, white background

For accompanying children under 18 years (additionaly):

  • the original and a copy of a birth certificate of a child
  • if a child is entered in the passport of his parent, a copy of his passport (identification page and a page with child’s personal particulars) is required
  • the original and a copy of a written consent stamped by a notary public from both parents (one of the parents) or the legal guardian of the child
  • a copy of the internal passport (the identification page) from both parents (one of the parents) or the legal guardian of the child.
