Residence Permit Based on Family Ties

A person who has an intention to live in Sweden must apply for a residence permit.

It applies for a person who wants to:

  • live with his/her spouse or partner
  • a child under 18 years of age who wants to re-unite with his parents
  • close relative who has previously shared a household and wants to re-unite.

The person who is the referent must be a Swedish citizen or have a permanent residence permit in Sweden.

How to apply?

You can send in your application by post, submit it yourself or by proxy.

Attention!
On 15th of November 2010 the Swedish Migration Board has introduced new application forms for residence permits concerning family ties and has added a new form: ” Family details Appendix” which has to be filled out by all applicants including children .
All links on the Swedish Migration Board and the Embassy Web pages have been updated.

What is the application fee?

If you submit the application yourself or by proxy you must pay the application fee when you apply. If you send the application by post you should pay the fee at the personal interview at the Migration Office. Please do not send any money with your application by post.

Handling at the Embassy

One week after submitting the application you must book a time for a personal interview at the Migration Office of the Embassy of Sweden and at the same time you will be informed by the handling officer about the missing documents which you must submit at the personal interview.

If you have sent your application by post you have to call the Migration Office of the Embassy two weeks after. The handling officer will check the status your case.

All applicants, including children, must come to the booked personal interview. At that time your documents will be controlled, your photo will be taken and a short interview will be performed.

Handling at the Migration Board

The complete application will be sent to the Migration Board in Sweden for processing. The referent person will fill in a questionnaire form and the Migration Board will in some cases perform a interview. You will receive the decision from the Migration Board no more than six month after you have submitted your application.
It may take longer in case additional information or/and documents are needed.

Visa during waiting period

One can apply for a short stay visa during a waiting period, after having applied for a residence permit. The processing of your application may be significantly delayed if the Migration Board discovers that you are in Sweden and therefore must wait for you to leave the country before a decision can be taken. If you are still in Sweden, you are at a risk of having the application for the residence permit refused and may even be expelled.

What documents are required?

NOTE:

  • All documents should be submitted in two copies.
  • If you send your application by post, please do not enclose your passport and the originals of the official documents (only copies).
  • You have to bring your originals and all the missing documents to the personal interview at the Migration Office.
  • The application and the questionnaire must be fully completed in English or Swedish!
  • The Embassy will not perform any translations.

If you are married, cohabiting with a person living in Sweden (with accompanying children) you should submit:

-Application for residence permit in English or Swedish and
-Family details Appendix in English or Swedish 
-Questionnaire form for persons who are married persons/common law spouses and accompanying children in English or Swedish
-Application for residence permit for children under 18 year in English or Swedish and
-Family details Appendix in English or Swedish 

official marriage:

  • Marriage certificate and its copy. If your marriage has been registered outside of Sweden, a copy of a marriage certificate must be translated into English or Swedish and stamped by a notary public.

  • Confirmation of a marriage registration from country of origin, if a marriage has been registered in Sweden (e.g. a marriage stamp in the applicant's internal passport).

  • Familjebevis-an extract from the Swedish population register for the referee. The referee orders this form from the Swedish National Tax Agency (Skatteverket) and it has to be not more than three month old.

  • Divorce certificate and its copies (if any).

  • Passport or other travel document and a copy of its identification page.

  • Internal passport and copies of all pages (marked and stamped).

  • Application fee

for common law spouses:

  • A confirmation that the applicant and the referent were registered at the same address outside of Sweden.

  • If the cohabitation took place in Sweden, the applicant should submit a civil registration certificate showing that the reference person is entered in the population register at the address in question and if possible show documents that prove that the applicant has also lived there.

  • Divorce certificate and copies (if any).

  • Passport or other travel document and a copy of its identification page.

  • Internal passport and copies of all pages (marked and stamped).

  • Application fee

For accompanying children under 18 years (additionaly):

  • the original and a copy of a birth certificate of a child
  • if a child is entered in the passport of his parent, a copy of his passport (identification page and a page with child’s personal particulars) is required
  • the original and a copy of a written consent (for permanent residence) stamped by a notary public from both parents (one of the parents) or the legal guardian of the child
  • a copy of the internal passport (the identification page) from both parents (one of the parents) or the legal guardian of the child

If you are planning to marry of cohabit with a person living in Sweden (with accompanying children) you should submit:

-Application for residence permit in English or Swedish and
-Family details Appendix in English or Swedish
-Questionnaire form for persons who are planning to marry or cohabit and their accompanying children in English or Swedish
-Application for residence permit for children under 18 year in English or Swedish and
-Family details Appendix in English or Swedish 

and also:

  • Familjebevis-an extract from the Swedish population register for the referee. The referee orders this form from the Swedish National Tax Agency (Skatteverket) and it has to be not more than three month old.

  • Divorce certificate and copies from earlier marriages (if any).

  • Passport or other travel document and a copy of its identification page.

  • Internal passport and copies of all pages (marked and stamped).

  • Other documents which may prove the seriousness of the relationship (photographs, e-mail, telephone bills etc.).

  • Application fee

For accompanying children under 18 years (additionaly):

  • the original and a copy of a birth certificate of a child
  • if a child is entered in the passport of his parent, a copy of his passport (identification page and a page with child’s personal particulars) is required
  • the original and a copy of a written consent (for permanent residence) stamped by a notary public from both parents (one of the parents) or the legal guardian of the child
  • a copy of the internal passport (the identification page) from both parents (one of the parents) or the legal guardian of the child

If you are a minor applying for residence permit and wish to take up a residence with a parents living in Sweden:

-Application for residence permit for children under 18 year in English or Swedish and
-Family details Appendix in English or Swedish 
-Questionnaire form for minors with parents in Sweden in English or Swedish

and also:

  • Familjebevis-an extract from the Swedish population register for the referee. The referee orders this form from the Swedish National Tax Agency (Skatteverket) and it has to be not more than three month old.

  • Passport or other travel document and a copy of its identification page.

  • Internal passport and copies of all pages (marked and stamped).

  • The original and a copy of a birth certificate of the child.

  • The original and a copy of a written consent (for permanent residence) stamped by a notary public from both parents (one of the parents) or the legal guardian of the child
  • A copy of the internal passport (the identification page) from both parents (one of the parents) or the legal guardian of the child

  • Application fee

If you are wishing to reside with a close relative with whom he/she has previously shared a household and has a relationship of dependence which makes it very difficult to live apart:

-Application for residence permit in English or Swedish and
-Family details Appendix in English or Swedish 
-Questionnaire form (in English or Swedish) regarding membership of a joint household in English or  Swedish
-Application for residence permit for children under 18 year in English or Swedish and
-Family details Appendix in English or Swedish 

and also:

  • Proof of the close relationship.

  • Familjebevis-an extract from the Swedish population register for the referee. The referee orders this form from the Swedish National Tax Agency (Skatteverket) and it has to be not more than three month old.

  • Passport or other travel document and a copy of its identification page.

  • Internal passport and copies of all pages (marked and stamped).

  • Other documents which may prove that been part of the same household in your home country and you have a relationship where the degree of dependence makes it difficult to live apart.

  • Application fee

For accompanying children under 18 years (additionaly):

  • the original and a copy of a birth certificate of a child
  • if a child is entered in the passport of his parent, a copy of his passport (identification page and a page with child’s personal particulars) is required
  • the original and a copy of a written consent (for permanent residence) stamped by a notary public from both parents (one of the parents) or the legal guardian of the child
  • a copy of the internal passport (the identification page) from both parents (one of the parents) or the legal guardian of the child

In all other cases, the applicant must book a time for an interview.
