Visa checklist

Here you will find a list of the documents you need to apply for a Schengen visa.

All applicants must submit:

• A completed and signed application form for Schengen visa.

• Proof of payment. Some categories are exempt from fee. Special rules apply for spouses of EU/EEA citizens and their children under 21. Please note that relatives and spouses of Swedish nationals must pay a fee to apply for a visa for visiting Sweden.

• Passport, which must be valid for a period of three months after your last day of stay in the Schengen states. If you hold a temporary R.S.A. passport, please contact the embassy.

• Two recent passport sized photographs in colour with light background.

• Policy for travel insurance, which should cover medical costs of at least EUR 30,000 and be valid for the whole duration of stay and in all Schengen states.

• Bank statements for the last three months (no older than two weeks at the time of submission), proving capacity to support yourself during your whole stay, if you are paying for your upkeep yourself.

• Round-trip travel itinerary specifying entry and exit dates from the Schengen state.

• A letter from your employer stating continuing employment after period of leave and duration of vacation.

• The Appendix D form (family appendix).

• The visa for the final country of destination (if needed) must be obtained before applying for a Schengen visa.

For children under 18:*

• A certified parental consent must be submitted if the child is travelling alone or with only one parent.

• Documentation from school confirming attendance.

Visit to family or friends:

If you are going to visit relatives or friends you must submit:

• The Appendix E form (invitation).

• A civic registration certificate from the reference person in Sweden.

Travelling as a tourist:

If your purpose of travel is tourism you must submit:

• A confirmed hotel reservation.

• In case of a pre-paid tour, please provide the details of the tour with proof of payment to the tour operator.

Travelling on business:

If you intend to travel on business or attend a conference you must submit:

• A signed invitation from the company inviting you or the person arranging the conference and a letter from your company. Both letters should contain information on your personal details, your reason for visiting Sweden, how long you will stay and who is responsible for your upkeep.

• If you apply for a one-year visa with multiple entries, both your company and the inviter must state the reason why you need this visa. 

Additional documents and/or a personal interview with the applicant may be requested at any time.
