Visa checklist

Here you will find a list of the documents you need to apply for a Schengen visa. Please note, an application will not be accepted if it is not complete.

All applicants must submit:

  • A completed and signed (twice) Application form for Schengen visa.  (no. 119031)

  • Proof of payment. Some categories are exempt from fee. Special rules apply for spouses of EU/EEA citizens and their children under 21. Please note that relatives and spouses of Swedish nationals must pay a fee to apply for a visa for visiting Sweden.

  • Passport, which must be valid for a period of three months after your last day of stay in the Schengen states. Please be advised that South African temporary passports are no longer accepted as travel document when applying for a visa to go to Sweden.

  • Two recent passport sized photographs in colour with light background. (DO NOT STAPLE)

  • Policy for travel insurance which should cover medical costs of at least Euro 30.000 and be valid for the whole duration of stay and in all Schengen states.

  • Bank statements for the last three months (no older than two weeks upon submission) proving capacity to support yourself during your whole stay, if you are paying for your upkeep yourself.

  • Round trip travel itinerary specifying entry and exit dates from Schengen state.

  • A letter from your employer stating continuing employment after period of leave and duration of vacation.

  • Family details –appendix to your application, form no 239011

  • The visa of the final country of destination (if needed) must be obtained before applying for a Schengen visa.

For children under 18:

  • All children under 18 must submit an unabridged birth certificate issued by the Home Affairs (verified copy by Commissioner of oath).

  • A child under 18 travelling without parents, or with only one parent, must additionally submit; I) copies of parents'/legal guardians' identification card(s) (verified by Commissioner of oath); II) a parental written consent (verified by Commissioner of oath.

  • If only one parent has guardianship of the minor, the court documents stating this must be presented (verified copy by Commissioner of oath).

  • If the applicant is in the care of a guardian other than the parents, proof of the High Court’s appointment must accompany the application (verified copy by Commissioner of oath).

  • If a parent is deceased, his or her death certificate must accompany the application (verified copy by Commissioner of oath).

  • Documentation from school confirming attendance.

If you intend to visit relatives or friends you must submit:

  • Invitation and questionnaire concerning a person who wishes to visit you in Sweden. (English form no 237011 or Swedish form 236011).

  • A civic registration certificate from the reference person in Sweden.

If your purpose of travel is tourism you must submit:

  • A confirmed hotel reservation.

  • In case of a pre-paid tour, please provide the details of the tour with proof of payment to the tour operator.

If you intend to travel on business or attend a conference you must submit:

  • A signed invitation from the company inviting you or the person arranging the conference and a letter from your company. Both letters should contain information on your personal details, your reason for visiting Sweden, how long you will stay and who is responsible for your upkeep.

  • If you apply for a one-year visa with multiple entries, both your company and the inviter must state the reason why you need this visa. 

Additional documents and/or a personal interview with the applicant may be requested at any time.
