Qualification to apply for visiting researchersIn order to apply as visiting researchers, you must have a university or college education which qualifies you for access to postgraduate studies.
Where do I apply?An application for a residence permit for visiting researchers can be filed at the Embassy of Sweden in Tokyo (in person or by post) or via the Swedish Migration Board’s website (e-forms)Embassy visiting hour: 9:00-12:00 on weekdays except the embassy's holidays.
What documents do I need?Following documents are required if you apply at the Embassy of Sweden in Tokyo:(All documents MUST be written in English or Swedish)
• Two sets of completed application form "Application for a residence permit for a visiting researcher"
• Two passport size photographs: full face, colour, light background, not more than 6 months old, bareheaded unless special religious reasons exist (4.5cm x 3.5cm)
• Two copies of your passport showing your identity, the terms of validity of your passport and any permits to stay in any other country than your country of origin
• Hosting agreement approved by your host organization in original and one copy
Hosting agreement must contain details of: - Purpose, duration and funding of the research project - The visiting researcher ‘s qualifications to complete the assignment - The visiting researcher’s terms and conditions of engagement - Comprehensive health insurance if you will stay for less than one year in Sweden - Sufficient funds for maintenance of you during the stay in Sweden and for the return journeyHow much does it cost?• free of charge for Japanese citizen • non-Japanese citizens JPY 13,000• children under 18, JPY 6,400 Fee is payable at time of application and are non-refundable.Who decides?Application submitted to the embassy will be forwarded to the Swedish Migration Board in Sweden and they make decision.
How will I find out the result?
How can I obtain the permit?Regardless of how you applied, you can pick up your residence permit at the embassy. If you have applied via the website, please contact us in advance to confirm that we have your decision. The residence permit must be affixed in your passport before you travel to Sweden. You cannot travel to Sweden and wait for the decision in Sweden.
Please bring or send your passport to the embassy. For those who have applied via the website must come to the embassy in person with your passport and two photos. (size 4.5 x 3.5 cm). If you would like to have your passport returned by post, please provide a self-addressed envelope with JPY560 stamp (Kakitome in Japanese). Please note that issuing the permit sticker may take a couple of working days. The embassy is not responsible for any delay or loss that may be caused by the postal service.
Can my wife and children stay in Sweden with me?Family members, registered partner or cohabitee and your children under age of 18 wishing to accompany the applicant must submit their own application separately.
