Sweden in California

According to the 1990 US Census there are almost 600,000 Californians of Swedish ancestry. In addition, there are thousands of Swedish citizens working and studying in California. There is, however, no Little Sweden or Swede Town. Instead, many Swedes find community by attending the Swedish Church in San Pedro; socializing at Swedish-American organizations; sending their kids to the Swedish Schools; shopping in Swedish stores, and eating at Swedish restaurants.

Swedish Church

The Swedish Church in San Pedro is a Seamen's Church, but it caters to the spiritual needs of all Swedes in the GLA area. A broad spectrum of activities for young and old is arranged at the Church. Major Swedish holidays are celebrated at the Church such as the Swedish National Day, which is June 6, but is celebrated on the closest Sunday. Once a month, a Church service in Swedish is celebrated in San Francisco.
